January
Time to start planning for the new garden year by reading catalogues
for ideas. Sketch your garden layout in order to plan for future changes.
Don't worry if hardy bulbs such as daffodils show foliage since they
will grow more and be fine. Use anti-desicannt spray on evergreen
shrubs to reduce moisture loss.
February
Granular bulb fertilizer can be sprinkled on beds with hardy bulbs.
If the wind has blown away mulch, replace it to protect plants. Use
horticultural oil spray on rose stems if the bushes had insect pest
problems in the pest. Can start pruning deciduous trees this month.
March
Prune your shrubs. Cut off every stem that you find that is six to
twelve inches from the ground. Since crocuses spread easily into the
lawn, delay mowing until their foliage ripens. Water your grass if
this spring is dry. When day temperatures are above 45 degrees and
above freezing at night, you can remove protective mulch around your
roses.
